Making money is a mindset. And if you’re in resistance to it, it’ll either stay out of your reach or slip through your fingers. You can’t attract what you’re in resistance too. Many people are in resistance to money and don’t even realize it. What are ways you can be in resistance to money? This week in Deeper Thoughts we’re going to talk about how money is a mindset and what you might be doing and the thoughts that are keeping you from it.
Thinking that money is hard to get keeps you in a poverty mindset and due to this many struggle to increase their funds. Getting vast amounts of money quickly isn’t always easy. You can work, budget, save and invest your money to watch it grow. Most people today want instant gratification and expect to get rich quick. Some people might get lucky and have this happen, but the majority of us are going to have to put in some effort.
The belief that you have to work hard to make money is another money mindset issue, oftentimes going hand in hand with the previous statement. Working to make money is the slowest way to acquire wealth. While yes you have to put in some work, providing services will make you more money. Being willing to do things other people can’t or won’t do will bring in more money.
Things like landscaping, tree cutting, fence building, housekeeping, etc are excellent examples of services people pay for. Providing courses in things you’re an expert in is another example of a service. In this scenario you’ll have to do upfront work to design this course, and will have to continue to promote it to get new customers, but if you have information someone wants, that can be a service. It’s not that working won’t bring you more money, but rather it’s the type of work you do. Hourly wages and salaries aren’t always going to make the cut.
Another example of not having to work hard for money is finding investments that suit you that make you more money, such as investing in stocks, real estate, businesses, etc. While you might have to start out working to save up enough money to invest over time, depending on the stocks or whatever you invest in, you can be earning passive income, such as with dividend stocks.
What’s another limiting money mindset issue many people have? Thinking the rich are evil and being poor makes you a good person. Many people have this ingrained in them. While money isn’t everything we need to keep in mind that life is a lot less stressful when you can pay bills, have food in your belly, and a roof over your head.
So what are some reasons we have such negative thoughts about rich people? Many times the bad guys in movies and stories are rich. This builds up in our subconscious mind as we grow up.
Another reason many people hate the rich is because of taxes. The general public often thinks the rich don’t pay taxes when in fact they either know the tax laws better or pay accountants who do and take advantage of loopholes. That same information is available to us, it’s just that most of us won’t take the time to learn them.
People often think that because the rich are rich that they don’t have any problems. This couldn’t be further from the truth! They have issues in life just like we do, but they can tend to be different. Some things might be easier to handle because they have more money, but sometimes those issues can be because of the money, like making sure those aforementioned taxes are paid and tidy. Even taking things like that out of the equation, they still get sick, have relationship issues and many other problems we all have that money itself doesn’t fix.
A lot of people think the rich are stingy with their money, but the rich donate the most to charities and organizations. The same people who think this also get angry because the rich don’t donate enough. Many of these people want handouts. They think, “Rich people don’t need that much money, they should spread the wealth around.” But why should they? They put in the work to create that wealth, not the person wanting handouts. And even those who inherited wealth have to stay on top of things to maintain that wealth and grow it or risk losing it all.
For all these reasons many people think that money itself is evil. Or they think it changes you. There’s nothing wrong with wanting money, but it only becomes a problem if it’s an all consuming obsession with a person. Often money will just show people’s true colors. What the person who acquires it is like, and what the friends and family of those who acquire it truly are like.
One of the biggest money mindset issues many people have to overcome is thinking they don’t deserve to have money. If you don’t think you deserve something you’ll do what you can consciously or subconsciously to keep it away. If your family has always been poor and you don’t think you’ll ever be any better, then you won’t. You won’t try things or take risks that can increase your wealth.
Shame is another aspect that keeps people opposed to money, even if they don’t realize it. A person might not think having money is bad, but if their family or societal group thinks so for whatever reasons, they might be shamed for wanting to acquire wealth.
Of course there are many more things that mentally keep you resistant to money beyond what I’ve listed here. Studying the mindset you have and where it stems from helps you make changes to this and improves your relationship with money, and overtime your finances will begin to improve. Most, if not all of these money mindset issues stem from childhood. We tend to take on the mindsets of our family, friends, religions, and cultures. All these conditionings and programming shape our habits and thoughts throughout our lives.
What’s your relationship to money? Is it positive? Do you need to work on some mindsets? Examine your thoughts around money and see what money mindsets you need to keep, grow, or change, then start aligning yourself toward your financial goals. For more and deeper depth on this topic I recommend reading the books “Think and Grow Rich,” by Napoleon Hill, and “You Were Born Rich,” by Bob Proctor. All things begin in the mind, and that includes gaining wealth.
Thank you for reading and have an enlightening day.
